Biography

Ernest was born on June 6, 1922 to Benjamin F. Engeman and Emma Heisen Engeman. He grew up in Fort Madison, Iowa.

After studying Aerospace Enginneering for a time at Iowa State in 1945, he entered service on Ferbuary 3, 1943 at Jefferson Barracks, Missouri. He trained at Beloit, Wisconsin, and the Santa Ana California airbase.

When he was 21 years old, he completed the army's primary flight training course at Thunderbird Field #1 at Glendale, Arizona. Eventually, he became a navigator aboard a B-17 Flying Fortress with the 603th Bomber Squadron, 398th Bomber Group. 

Second Lieutenant Ernest Fred Engeman went missing in action on August 4, 1944 over Griefswald, Germany. Later, his death was placed on August 5, 1944.
