Biography

Second Lieutenant Henry Horace Russel grew up in Washington, Iowa. He was the son of Mr. H.W. Russell.

"He spelled Russel, with one "L" only," - H.W. Russell, in a letter clarifying the names of the Gold Star Hall, 1928.

Henry studied Chemical Engineering at Iowa State College, but left before his anticipated graduation with the Class of 1919. He had enlisted in the Army at Des Moines, Iowa on June 3, 1917. The Army assigned him to the 7th Regiment engineers at Fort Logan, Colorado. He arrived in France on March 18, 1918 and was comissioned second lieutenant on September 25, 1918.

Henry was killed in action on October 14, 1918 in Argonne, France.
