UMC Culture of Care

Montez Butts, University of Colorado Boulder

The University of Colorado Boulder focuses on promoting a Culture of Care with UMC Staff. The Culture of Care is an acronym for nine core values which help cultivate key attitudes and behaviors within the work culture. In addition, other resources such as an Expectations of Teamwork document and annual Employee Retention Survey help the UMC to develop professional development and staff retention strategies.

Student Unions and Disunions: How students, faculty, and staff relationships get embedded in campus life

Dr. Rachel Smith, Iowa State University

Campus places play a key role in shaping the relationship networks that students, faculty, and staff develop on campus. I will highlight recent research drawing on social network analysis to illuminate how space and social forces combine to produce patterns in how people build community. These insights can then be used for individual student development activities and institutional assessment to shape community-based spaces and programming.

From Disaster to Design: Facilities Renewal Through Flood Recovery

Tracie Brown, Oklahoma State University

What began as an unexpected flood quickly revealed hidden opportunities. Planning and Designing Places that Connect People and Purpose

Chad Garland & Brad Hill, Iowa State University

Mark Nevenhoven, Invision

Master planning goes beyond looking into future space needs, it needs to align vision, people, and place. INVISION partnered with Iowa State University to lead a collaborative planning process for the Memorial Union that engaged users, assessed existing conditions, and explored future possibilities. This presentation will walk through the master planning process, share key takeaways from ISU’s experience, and highlight how INVISION helped shape a clear and actionable plan to guide the Memorial Union’s future growth and continued impact on students and campus life.

From Tradition to Transformation: Funding and Sustaining Student Life through Strategic Partnerships

Jordy Dickey, Baylor University

What happens when Student Activities, Advancement, and corporate partners like Playfly operate as true collaborators instead of separate lanes? At Baylor University, these partnerships have unlocked long-term donor investment, diversified revenue streams, and sustainable program growth. This session will explore how leveraging traditions and innovative programming has created a compelling donor and sponsor narrative, strengthened funding pipelines, and preserved impact over time. Participants will leave with replicable models for collaboration, stewardship, and program longevity.

*As conference dates near, we will add additional details and some times and locations may change. The overall conference dates and start/end times will not change so that you can make your travel arrangements.

Virtual Attendance

We understand that some of you may be unable to join us due to travel freezes, budget constraints, or other professional or personal commitments. We plan to livestream at least some of the educational sessions. More information will be provided as we get closer to the conference but please reach out to 2025uniondirectors@iastate.edu if you plan to join virtually so that we can make sure you have the details.

Campus Presentations

We will not be scheduling time for formal campus presentations at this year's conference. Instead, we will continue with the written institutional updates that were piloted by TCU/Baylor last year. We encourage all institutions, whether or not they are able to join us in Ames, to submit their updates by October 20 in order to be included in the campus updates that will be provided to all Big 12 members during and after the conference.
