Biography
Year at ISU: 1941
Lieutenant Charles Raymond Seitz grew up in Glenwood and studied General Engineering at Iowa State College. His father, Captain R. Seitz, Sr., had also attending Iowa State in the late 1910s (Ex 1921, Agricultural Engineering). He lived until August 20, 1972.
One of Lieutenant Seitz's friends wrote to the Alumni Association. The letter was dated April 13, 1945:
"Dear Red,
I would like to have some information from your about Ray Seits (Ex '41) as to his whereabouts. I know that he is or was listed as missing in action (and then as a prisoner of war) and there is a chance he might have been rescued from one of the prison camps on the Philippine Islands. Ray is a fraternity brother and former roommate of mine and I am very interested in finding out about him.
Along with the all the alumni, I enjoy the news given about in the Alumnus very much and your are doing a remarkable job on it. I hope you and the family are fine and that Iowa State keeps on the upgrade.
Will you please note the change of address and change the mailing list now that the U.S.S. Entemedor is in commission?
Best Regards, Cal. Lt. (jg) F. J. Callahan USNR"
Charles died aboard a Japanese prison ship when an American submarine sank it on September 7, 1944, somewhere in the southwest pacific, perhaps near the Philippines. He had been taken as a prisoner of war and reported missing in action during the Fall of Bataan in early 1942.
