Ensign Daniel Starr Branstiter came from Sumner, Nebraska. He was born on January 21, 1922 to Daniel Elsie Branstiter and Blanche M. Snodgrass. He lived for a time in Walnut, Iowa.

Daniel enlisted in the US Naval Reserve on August 21, 1942 in Humbolt, Iowa. He reported for training on September 2, 1942 at Sheldon, IA. He made Ensign on February 12, 1944 at Corpus Christi, Texas, upon graduating from the Naval Air Training Center.

He died in a plane accident either there or at Millerstown, Pennsylvania or in New Jersey (the records are not clear) on either July 14 or 17, 1944.
