Biography

George Howard Clarke was born on October 20, 1916 to John Clarke, who founded the Clarke Hybrid corn company in Grundy County, and Ruth Hauser. George was raised in Conrad, Iowa.

George entered service in Des Moines, Iowa on June 24, 1941 and trained in radio operation and gunnery at Las Vegas, New Mexico. Later that year he completed training as an air cadet and was commissioned as a Second Lieutenant.

His last service assignment was with the 1st Arctic Search and Rescue Squadron.

He died in a plane crash at Sukkertoppen, Greenland, on November 28, 1943. One year later, his father died and his brother took over the company.
