Biography

Sgt. Cavanagh, of Neola, was taken prisoner by the Japanese in the Philippines and died of disease in the Karenko prison camp on Formosa in October 1943. 

Master Sgt. James Cavanaugh was the first Neola serviceman to be returned for burial. He was the son of Mrs. Angela Cavanaugh. James was 1 of 8 children.

James' brother Paul (born 1921) also served in WWII. Paul died at age 92 in 2014. Paul and his wife Mary also both attended ISU.
