Biography
Lieutenant Colonel John Robert Morrison was born in Valentine, Nebraska on January 21, 1910. His last home address was in Clarksville, Tenessee.
After graduating from Iowa State in Civil Engineering, he entered law school at Columba Unviersity in the fall of 1931.
He entered service as a second lieutenant on January 21, 1941 at Fort Riley, Kansas where he made first lieutenant and a later captain. He graduated from Command and General Staff School at Fort Leavenworth, Kansas on August 28, 1943, and was promoted to Lieutenant Colonel in May 27, 1944. He served with the 125th Armored Engineering Battalion.
John was injured on April 24, 1945 and died the next day at Hirschberg, Germany. He was initially buried at the US Army cemetery, but his body was later moved to St. Avold, France.
His awards in include the Bronze Star (March 1945), the Purple Heart, and the Silver Star (both May 1945). His parents were Joseph S. Morrison, who graduated from Iowa State in 1897 and Sophia Schott Morrison, who graduated from Iowa State in 1900. He had two sisters, Alice and Ruth, and one brother named George. He married Elizabeth O'Malley in Ottumwa, Iowa. They had two children - John J., 3.5 years, and Mary E., who was one year old at the time of her father's death. .
