Zeigler was born in Muscatine, Iowa to H. W. Zeigler and Geneva M Shiek on February 5, 1919, but grew up in Anamosa, Iowa.

Lee entered service on April 14, 1941 at Glenview, Illinois, Naval Air Station. He received his wings and commission on December 31, 1941.

Flying Ensign Lee Channing Zeigler and Aviation Cadet David L. Hung of Jackson, Mississippi died in the crash of a training plane while taking off from an auxillary air field at Pace Field, Pensacola, Florida. The crash happened on September 7, 1942.

He was an aviation instructor at Pensacola at the time of his death.
