Biography

US MARINE CORPS WORLD WAR II

Corporal Ole Wibholm was born in Demark along with his sister Esther. He had another sister named Ingebord. Their parents, Ole and Kathrin, came to America and lived at first in Woodward, Iowa and later Clarinda, Iowa.

Both Ole and Esther graduated in 1936. Their father had graduated from the Royal Agricultural College of Denmark at Copenhagen and came to Iowa as a Dairy inspector. They attended Iowa State College for two years. Ole was elected finance manager for the exhibit "The Dairy World of Tomorrow" at the New York World's Fair.

Ole Christian Wibholm Junior enlisted in the Marine Corps December, 1942 from Clarinda, Iowa. Qualified Rifle Sharpshooter and completed recruit training in the 4th Recruit Training Battalion, MCB San Diego, CA. Assigned to the Training Command, MCB Camp Elliott, CA. 5 April, 1943 assigned to the 16th Replacement Battalion.

17 April, 1943 embarked SS Lurline at San Diego for movement overseas. 27 April, 1943 at Tutuila, Samoa. Upon arrival at Wellington, New Zealand assigned to HQ Company, Intelligence Section, 2nd Battalion, 8th Marines, 2nd Marine Division at Paekakariki. Promoted to Private First Class MOS 631 Intelligence Marine (Scout).

28 October, 1943 embarked the USS Heywood (APA-6) at Wellington. 7-14 November, 1943 landing rehearsals at Efate, New Hebrides. 20 November, 1943 landed Red Beach Three Tarawa D-Day and participated in combat operations until 24 November, 1943. 8 December 1943 arrived at Hilo, Hawaii based at Camp Tarawa near Kamuela. Promoted to Corporal.

11 May, 1944 embarked an LST. 12-19 May, 1944 landing rehearsals in Hawaiian waters. 20-25 May, 1944 in Pearl Harbor. 8-11 June, 1944 at Eniwetok, Marshalls. 15 June, 1944 landed Green Beach One Saipan D-Day and participated in combat operations until Wounded in Action 30 June, 1944.

Evacuated and Died of Wounds at Eniwetok, Marshall Islands, 4 July, 1944.


Initially buried in Plot 1, Row 8, Grave 245, Temporary USAF Cemetery # 6419, Eniwetok Atoll, Japtan Island, Marshall Islands.
Next of Kin: Parents, Mr Ole C Wibholm Senior and Mrs Katherin J Wibholm, 223 Mishna Street, Clarinda, Iowa.


During March, 1947 exhumed from Eniwetok cemetery and processed for repatriation to US at Schofield Barracks, Building 1092, Mausoleum #1, Oahu, Hawaii.

1948 returned to US aboard the USAT Cardinal O'Connell for permanent burial in Clarinda Cemetery, Clarinda, Iowa.
