Biography

Captain Samuel R. Blackman was born in Parson, West Virginia on November 8, 1916 to Joseph F. Blackman and Myrtle Paugh.

He received his second lieutenant commission upon graduating from Iowa State College in 1938. He reported for active duty at Fort McClellan, Louisiana under Colonel M.M. Potter, who was formerly an instructor at Iowa State. He made First Lieutenant in November 1941. He was promoted to captain and appointed to the regular army that the following February 1942.

Samuel served in Iceland with the 50th Field Artillery from February to November of 1942. He then served with the165th Field Artillery in England and Ireland until January of 1943, when he was sent to Africa.

He was killed in action in Tunisia on April 26, 1943.
