First Lieutenant William Frederick Brinkman was born to his parents Dr. W.F. Brinkman and Inez Essick on January 1, 1920. He grew up in Pochantas, Iowa. He also had a cousin named Thomas Franklyn Brinkman.

William was reported missing and later killed in action while piloting a B-17 over Germany. His date of death is April 11, 1943.

The rest of the B-17 crew, two other officers and six enlisted men, were reported killed, missing or captured.
